French canals 2009

This page will gradually be updated throughout the year.

In summary, during 2009 we travelled down the central canals onto the Saone, Rhone and down to south. After a fairly long break in Avignon we continued onto the Petit Rhone, Canal du Rhone a Sete, then the Canal du Midi. The weather was fairly typical: very hot most of the time and short spells with strong northerly winds. The scenery was fantastic, and very different to anything we had seen so far. The only downside was that we hit the Canal du Midi in August, right in the middle of the hite boat season. Everything we had heard about the hire boats on this section was true, so we vowed to avoid them as much as possible in future. We don't have anything against hire boats in general (we have hired lots of boats in the past), but in this area for some reason people seem to go mad in their boats.

We had a final return trip in October and took a short spin out on the Med., before putting the boat to bed for the winter.
